Siler City has some of the oldest housing in the Durham area's outer ring, a reservoir water supply now run by TriRiver Water, and a sewer plant operating under a state consent order. Plumber Durham is a free service that connects you with an independent plumber; it does not do the work itself. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Siler City.

Plumbing services in Siler City
Western Chatham's manufacturing town
Siler City is a Chatham County town about 36 miles from downtown Durham in a straight line, with Asheboro as its nearest larger city. It had 7,702 residents in 2020, and the 27344 ZIP holds about 19,200. US 64 runs through town as 11th Street, the US 421 bypass passes nearby, and North Chatham Avenue is the spine of the Siler City Commercial Historic District. Poultry processing has long anchored the local economy, and the town is majority Hispanic or Latino.
Older homes, older pipe
The median home here dates to 1980, and about half were built before that, with a large group from the 1950s. Houses from that period were commonly built with galvanized steel water lines and cast iron drains, both of which corrode and narrow with age. In the East Raleigh Street and North Third Avenue historic districts and the postwar streets around them, low pressure, rusty water and slow drains are common reasons to call.
Reservoir water through TriRiver
The Town's water system joined TriRiver Water, Sanford's regional utility, with assets transferred in mid-2025. Water still comes from the Siler City filtration plant, which typically treats about 3 million gallons a day from the Rocky River Reservoir and the 160-acre Charles L. Turner Reservoir the town built in 2009; together they hold more than 800 million gallons of raw water. The same plant serves Chatham County's Southwest District. Because supply rides on reservoir levels, the utility has asked customers to limit water use during dry spells, so check TriRiver's current notices in a drought. Ask TriRiver for its latest annual water quality report.
A sewer plant under a state order
The wastewater plant, permitted for 4.0 million gallons a day and now run by TriRiver, has been under a state Special Order by Consent over repeated nitrogen and ammonia violations, largely from poultry processing wastewater. A state moratorium on new sewer connections was imposed in 2022, and the amended order running through September 2027 calls for expanding the plant to 6.0 million gallons a day and rehabilitating the collection system. Anyone planning a new building or a new sewer tap should ask TriRiver about connection status early.
Permits, wells and gas
Chatham County Central Permitting & Inspections handles plumbing inspections in Siler City, the same office used in Pittsboro and the unincorporated county. Outside town, private wells are more common, and the county reports failing-well calls in Silk Hope and south of US 64 toward Pittsboro, mostly over iron and manganese. Enbridge Gas North Carolina serves parts of Chatham and has proposed a 28-mile pipeline beginning near Siler City; service still varies by street, and many rural homes use propane. If you smell gas, leave the building and call 911 or 1-877-776-2427 from outside.
Calling for a plumber
Next to Durham, the differences are older pipe, a drought-sensitive reservoir supply and county rather than city permits. Call the number on this page, describe the problem and whether the house is in town or on a well, and you will be connected with an independent plumber who works around Siler City.
