Pittsboro's water and sewer have been run by TriRiver Water, Sanford's regional utility, since July 2024, while a few subdivisions outside town are served by Aqua and rural homes may be on wells. Plumber Durham connects callers with independent plumbers and is not a plumbing company. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Pittsboro.

Plumbing services in Pittsboro
Chatham's county seat
Pittsboro was established in 1785 and has been the Chatham County seat since 1787; its downtown circles the courthouse in the Pittsboro Historic District. It is about 23 miles from downtown Durham in a straight line, Chapel Hill is the closest larger town, and Jordan Lake is roughly 8 miles east. The town itself had 4,537 residents in 2020, but the 27312 ZIP covers about 23,000 people across much of eastern Chatham. US 15-501, NC 87, US 64 Business and the US 64 bypass meet here, and the 7,100-acre Chatham Park development is reshaping the edge of town.
Newer houses than most of the area
The median Pittsboro home was built in 2002, and only about 11% predate 1980. For most calls that means the original water heater, fixtures and valves are what is wearing out, not buried pipe. The older homes near the courthouse are the exception.
Who runs the water
On July 1, 2024, the Town's water and sewer operations passed to TriRiver Water, operated by the City of Sanford (customer service 919-775-8215). Laurel Ridge, Chapel Ridge and The Parks at Meadowview, three subdivisions outside the limits, are billed and serviced by Aqua, a private company, under a 2002 contract. Beyond those, some county addresses have public lines and others use private wells.
Pittsboro's supply has come from the Haw River, and it is the only municipality drinking from it. NC Health News and other outlets have reported PFAS and 1,4-dioxane in the river from upstream discharges; in 2020, total PFAS at the intake measured 844 ppt, the highest of 320 plants in the PFAS Testing Network. A granular activated carbon system now removes about 90% of PFAS but not 1,4-dioxane, and during dioxane events the town has stopped drawing from the Haw and asked residents to cut non-essential use. A connection to Sanford's system and a Cape Fear River source was planned for about early 2027. TriRiver's annual water quality reports have current results.
Sewer capacity, permits and wells
Limited treatment capacity has led Pittsboro to impose or extend water-related moratoriums 15 times in 20 years, and a 2021 interlocal agreement plans an upgrade of Sanford's wastewater plant. That mostly matters to people building or adding fixtures. Plumbing inspections are handled by Chatham County Central Permitting & Inspections, which also covers Siler City, Goldston and unincorporated Chatham. On well properties near Chapel Ridge and south of US 64 toward Siler City, the county logs failing-well calls, mostly over iron and manganese, and UNC data show 36% of 3,128 tested Chatham wells above the EPA manganese health advisory. A water test should come before any treatment purchase.
Gas and calling
Enbridge Gas North Carolina has customers in Chatham County and plans a 28-mile pipeline through it, but service depends on the street and many rural homes use propane. If you smell gas, go outside, then call 911 or Enbridge's emergency line at 1-877-776-2427. Compared with Durham, the water provider and the permit office are both different. When you call the number on this page, mention whether TriRiver, Aqua or a well supplies your water, and you will be connected with an independent plumber who serves Pittsboro.
